Valentine’s Day Activities for Kids

For most kids, Valentine’s Day lacks the romantic pitfalls that the holiday can bring to adults. And thank goodness for that, because what it lacks in romantic drama, it makes up for in fun. These Valentine’s Day activities for kids will make the day even more enjoyable.

Make cards. Probably the best part of Valentine’s Day for kids is the exchanging of Valentine’s cards. Especially when a card for each classmate is in order, it may be tempting to go the easy route and pick up store-bought cards featuring Scooby Doo, Strawberry Shortcake, or Sponge Bob. But homemade cards are ever-so-much sweeter, and the process of making them is a great opportunity to break out the crafting materials and build excitement for the holiday. They can be as simple or as complicated as you and your kids please. Even pink and red construction-paper hearts, perhaps decorated with paper doilies or markers, will do the trick.

Make valentine cookies. Everyone loves getting cards, but sweet treats are another beloved Valentine’s tradition. Involve the kids this year by letting them help make sugar cookies. Use heart-shaped or other holiday themed cookie cutters and decorate the cookies with icing, sprinkles, even candy hearts. The kids will love decorating the cookies almost as much as they’ll enjoy eating and sharing them with friends.

Pin the heart on the lonely. This game is played exactly like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, but instead of a donkey, you should draw a picture of a person or animal that looks sad and lonely. Instead of a tail, use a heart and have blind-folded kids aim for the lonely one’s chest. Other Valentine’s themed games derived from classics include a friendly game of darts with a heart in the middle instead of a bulls-eye or a game of checkers with pink and red hearts instead of black and red round pieces.

Share a lovely greeting. Give the holiday a little more meaning by encouraging your kids to let their friends and family know how appreciated they are. Older kids can write meaningful cards to family members and special friends, while younger kids can be encouraged to share their feelings aloud on Valentine’s Day.
